A reliable conversion workflow
Start from the highest-quality source you have, rather than an image that has already been compressed repeatedly. Select WebP as the output and choose dimensions close to the largest size the image will actually be displayed at. Oversized source dimensions often waste more bytes than small quality adjustments can recover.
For photographs, begin with a moderate-to-high quality and inspect faces, foliage, text and smooth gradients at the intended display size. For transparent graphics, check the edges over both light and dark backgrounds. Lower quality can make files smaller but may introduce ringing, blur or banding.
Verify compatibility and size
Open the generated file in a browser or image viewer and compare its dimensions and file size with the source. Do not assume a conversion saved space: flat artwork and already optimized files can produce a larger output.
For broad legacy support, keep a JPEG or PNG fallback when your audience includes older software. Current web projects can usually serve WebP directly, but the choice should follow actual audience support and the site's delivery setup.
Frequently asked questions
Can I convert WebP without uploading it?
Yes. GZ converts the selected file with browser APIs on your device.
