About this tool

JPG and JPEG are two filename extensions for the same widely used image format. The browser decodes the photo and re-encodes it as WebP. Since JPEG is already lossy, each re-encode can discard additional detail; use a high enough quality for the intended display size and inspect fine textures.

The image is processed locally with browser APIs. Some browsers do not implement a WebP encoder; GZ checks the resulting MIME type and reports when the requested format is unavailable.

How to use it

  1. Drop a .jpg or .jpeg photo, or use the browse control.
  2. Set WebP quality and optional output dimensions.
  3. Check the result, then save the converted .webp file.

Frequently asked questions

Is JPG different from JPEG?

No. The extensions refer to the same JPEG image format.

Does converting to WebP always save space?

No. It often helps, but the exact size depends on the source image and chosen quality.
